Make Sales with Your Affiliate Programs

Have you ever signed up for an affiliate program, pasted the banners onto your site and then never saw anything in return? Many of us have. Do you run your own affiliate program for you own site, but your affiliates are not producing the results you would like? Now's the time to totally change the way you view and run your affiliate programs.

Firstly and most importantly - an affiliate program should not consist of simply pasting a banner onto a site and expecting the cash to start flowing. Banners by themselves are not particularly effective. Banners may catch someone's eye and yes they may click on the banner, but really, this is not the most effective method of advertising. Here are some tips to improve your affiliate statistics:

1. The selling should begin before the web site visitor clicks onto the affiliate link. A banner does not necessarily do this. An affiliate should be making a recommendation for the product or service, thus making the web site visitor already interest in making the purchase.

2. This selling is most effective when it comes in the form of a personal recommendation or in editorial format. If it sounds too much like an ad, it might not work so well. If you are promoting cloth diapers, for example, the affiliate can include a short editorial comment on the quality of the diapers and her experience with using the product.

3. Avoid signing up for a large number of affiliate programs in the hopes of "increasing your odds". Choose a few good programs and concentrate your efforts on them.

4. Choose a product or service that you are personally interested in. Don' t sell car parts if you know nothing about them and don't even know how to change the oil in your car. If you are passionate and interested in the product or service, this will shine through. If you are just trying to make money - your visitors will recognize this.

5. Choose affiliate programs that closely relate to the theme of your site. If you own a scrapbooking site, then selling golf clubs through an affiliate program may not be your best bet. However, an affiliate program for scrapbooking supplies or scrapbooking classes would be much more effective. Know your target audience and what they are interested in purchasing.

6. Include your affiliate program links in your email with a short personal recommendation. If the company is offering a sale or special offer, be sure to include that in your signature line. You never know who might be interested.

Above all, remember your target audience. What are they looking for? Do they appreciate the hard sell or are they looking for some honest advice? Keeping these things in mind will take you a long way to improving your affiliate programs.
